Great News!! Carlow Town Centre Gets Set For A €2.9 Million Pedestrian Link To Railway Station After Part 8 Gets Approved At Council Meeting

A €2.9 million project to create a direct pedestrian link between Carlow Railway Station and Carlow town centre was unanimously approved by Carlow County Council members at the July County Council meeting.

This exciting development is expected to get underway in early 2025, significantly improving accessibility for pedestrians travelling between the train station, St. Leo’s College, Carlow College, and the town centre.

The project details were outlined by Senior Executive Architect for URDF, C Moriarty, who emphasised the collaborative effort involving all relevant parties, including St. Catherine’s Community Services, St. Joseph’s NS, St. Leo’s College, and Carlow College.  He emphasised that the design prioritises existing infrastructure and mature trees, ensuring the project seamlessly integrates into the surrounding landscape.

  • The Rail Link Project will seamlessly integrate with existing infrastructure and landscaping, ensuring minimal disruption to the natural environment.
  • The walkway will be open 24/7 and well-lit for added security.
  • While a cycle track is not included in the current plan, the design allows for future expansion to incorporate one if needed.
  • CCTV cameras will be installed along the walkway for enhanced safety.
  • Construction is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2025, following the appointment of a contractor in 2024.

 

Carlow County Council welcomes this project as a significant step forward for the town, promoting pedestrian access and encouraging a more active lifestyle. The project is also seen as an opportunity to boost access to the new hockey pitch at St. Leo’s College.

Director of Services P O’Gorman outlined the council’s goal of appointing a contractor in 2024 with the aim of commencing construction in the first quarter of 2025. He assured the council that the URDF project for the town is on track and progressing smoothly.

The unanimous approval of the Rail Link Project by Carlow County Council marks a significant step forward in enhancing accessibility and connectivity within Carlow town centre. This project is sure to benefit residents, students, and visitors alike.
